Flags of the World

downtown flags

Nikon D70, 28-70 mm lens at 1/80, f4.5

Location: Downtown Crossing, Boston
Distance: 3.5 miles, 5.5 km
Transportation: Subway

Flags hanging outside of a building in Downtown Crossing. The saturation, curves, and levels are all increased to bring out the flags relative to the bleak background buildings.

Interesting. I could see how the adjustments give you the effect you want. But it seems to also have added the nasty side effect of posterization. Or was that intentional? :) Also, not sure what ISO you used, but the adjustments might have also increased the color noise?

Here's a link with more info on posterization (which I guess occurs when we get aggressive with levels and curves):

I guess this is one of the benefits of photographing in RAW vs. JPG (being able to do editing in 16-bit). I'm still too lazy to shoot in RAW. :)

I like how the contrast adjustments change the texture of the stone exteriors of the building though.

I agree, the posterization is evident, but I really don't mind it that much. I think some pictures can get away with it, although I tend to prefer pictures without the effect. I think one of the problems with this photo is that this is a crop of a larger picture that I didn't like. I should have gone back to Downtown Crossing and re-taken the picture with the flags as the main subject--but I was too lazy.

I think cropping is okay. It's not like you can really tell if a photo's been cropped or not (unless it's obviously a non-standard size).

I am actually a firm believer in cropping, and adjusting levels/saturation and sometimes, contrast. This picture, however, was severely cropped, attributing to some of the graininess. As for ISO, I think it was 400.
